Specter To Switch Parties

The New York Times has reported that Sen. Arlen Spector of Pennsylvania is switching parties . He will no longer be a Republican but will instead be a Democrat. This means that, once Al Franken is sworn in as Senator, the Democrats will have a 60 vote majority. This is a huge development. In light of all that we must do to ensure the survival of our nation, the fact that a united front stands against the reactionary forces of the far right is an important one.

The party of No is in serious trouble. They are not in trouble due to a failure in tactics. Their political skills have been tremendous and have proven useful in their climb to power. They are in trouble because no amount of skill can overcome a lack of substance. The current Republican Party is led by opportunists. They don’t care about ideals as much as the influence and profit that can be made from their positions. In many ways Spector is still a Republican in general philosophy, but the modern Republican party has expunged diversity of thought from its ranks, and has given us a filibuster proof majority.
